Thanks for the suggestions. Have just watched Steven Smith’s Lectures on Political Philosophy. Very interesting. Smith’s closing advice to students, to “read old books where nowadays good teachers are hard to find” seemed to sum him up – somewhere between a conservative and a radical liberal, but always quite open and – at the end – committed. It’s also helpfully disenchanted Yale for me – the students don’t get a significantly better education than I did.
